Macron fires back at Brazil’s Bolsonaro for insulting his wife
France’s President Emmanuel Macron has fired back at the Brazilian leader, calling him ‘extraordinarily rude’, after Bolsonaro insulted his wife over social media.
The Brazilian president appeared to endorse a sexist Facebook comment posted by one of his supporters which mocked 41-year-old Macron for being married to a woman who is almost 25 years older than him.
Following the destruction of vast swaths of the Amazon rain forest by uncontrolled fires, Macron called for emergency talks between the G7 countries and pressured Bolsonaro to take action. Bolsonaro then responded to Macron by accusing him of having a ‘colonialist mentality’.
Macron even threatened to block the approval of a free trade deal between the European Union and the South American common market until the fires were properly dealt with.
Things became even more personal yesterday when a supporter of Bolsonaro posted a meme which mocked 66-year-old Brigitte Macron and compared in an unfavorable way with Bosonaro’s 37-year-old wife Michell. The meme says: “Now you understand why Macron is persecuting Bolsonaro?” The Brazilian leader replied to the comment, saying ‘Do not humiliate the guy, haha,’ referring to Macron.
When questioned about the post at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, today, the French leader stated that ‘Brazilian women are probably feeling ashamed of their president.’
“[Mr. Bolsonaro] has made some extraordinarily rude comments about my wife,” Macron said at a press conference. “What can I say? It’s sad for him, firstly, and for Brazilians,” he continued.
Lastly, Macron said: “As I feel friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will very soon have a president who behaves in the right way.”
