Syrian man sentenced to 9.5 years in prison for murder that sparked Chemnitz riots last year
24-year-old Syrian asylum seeker Alaa Sheikhi was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for the murder of Chemnitz resident Daniel Hillig. The murder brought Chemnitz into the international spotlight after it triggered rights in the eastern German city.
Sheikh, who arrived in Germany in 2015 at the height of the migrant crisis, was arrested quickly after the fatal stabbing of 35-year-old Hillig, Bild reports.
