Trump Admin Just Announced Immigrants on Food Stamps Can Be Denied Green Cards
Under new rules announced Monday by President Donald Trump’s administration, immigrants who use various forms of public assistance, including Medicaid and food stamps, can be denied green cards.
The changes to existing federal law, which already require applicants seeking permanent residency in the United States to prove they will not be a “public charge,” are set to take effect in mid-October, the Associated Press reported.
A “public charge” is now defined as someone who is “more likely than not” to receive public benefits for more than 12 months within three years. Multiple benefits are included in the determination –
