11-Year-Old Says Teacher Banned Her From Picking President Trump as Her Hero in Class Project
Everyone has a different hero. For some little boys, even the garbageman counts (they do drive those big cool trucks). And little girls sometimes pick a cartoon princess as their heroine.
But Bella Moscato, age 11, of Ronkokoma, New York, is a little more politically inclined than most youngsters. So when a school project called for students to write about their hero in an assignment, Bella wanted to pick President Trump. He is, after all, president of the United States, and that, to a lot of people, is heroic.
“Donald Trump is my hero,” she said, according to News 12 Long Island. But she said her teacher wouldn’t let her pick the president. “She said I wasn’t allowed to do Donald Trump because he spreads negativity and says bad things about women.” And she added that “The thing I didn’t get, she was OK with someone doing Barack Obama, but not OK with Donald Trump? That’s what got me angry.”
“Bella’s mother, Valerie Moscato, says she was outraged when her daughter called her from school about the incident. She says what the teacher did amounts to intimidation and censorship,” News 12 reported.
“This was really frustrating to me because, you know, my daughter has every right to pick a hero of her choice. It’s [her] First Amendment right, freedom of speech, freedom of expression. So it was really upsetting to me that she was trying to shut her down,” she said, according to the Epoch Times.
In a document about the class assignment obtained by News 12 Long Island, Bella explained why she chose Trump as her hero when answering the question of “What positive contribution has this person made to society?”
“Donald Trump has helped millions of people by creating a great economy. He is fighting every day to protect the people from drugs crossing the border,” she wrote.
Bella’s father also criticized the teacher. “My daughter’s hero is the president of our country,” he said. “I can’t believe that anybody in the school would tell my daughter that that guy can’t be her hero.”

But Sachem Central School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Graham issued a statement to News 12 saying: “It is not accurate that this student was told that they were not allowed to conduct research or report on any individual for a school assignment, including President Trump. To the best of our knowledge, by choice the student is still conducting their project of President Trump.”
Bella’s dad disputed that account. “My story is not inaccurate, my daughter didn’t lie,” he said. “No one should make a child feel that way, and you’re supposed to protect my child.”
